On February 3, 2026, members of the Kentucky Sheriffs’ Association and the Kentucky Narcotic Officers’ Association met with Congressman Andy Barr in Washington, D.C., for the signing of an original copy of the Chief Herbert D. Proffitt Act. Signed into law by President Trump, the Act honors Chief Herbert D. Proffitt, a retired Tompkinsville Sheriff who was killed by a criminal he had incarcerated years earlier, and provides federal benefits to retired officers killed or disabled as a result of their service.
